Phrasal Verb
A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb + one or more particles (a preposition or an adverb) that create a new meaning together.
For example:
✅ Take off → (verb: “take” + particle: “off”) → Meaning: to remove (clothes) or to leave (an airplane).
✅ Give up → Meaning: to stop trying or quit something.
Types of Phrasal Verbs
- Transitive vs. Intransitive
- Transitive: Needs an object.
- She turned on the TV. (TV is the object.)
- Intransitive: No object needed.
- The plane took off. (No object.)

- Separable: The object can come between the verb and the particle.
- She turned the TV on. OR She turned on the TV.
- Inseparable: The object must come after the phrasal verb.
- I ran into my friend yesterday. (❌ “I ran my friend into” is incorrect.)
